Contractor: Resolution Property
Client: Colston Tower
Developed For: Artworks Solutions Ltd
Item/s: Freestanding Monolith
Resolution Property came to us with a proposal to ‘revamp’ the existing Monolith sign outside the front of Colston Tower as part of the buildings recent redevelopment. The new unit blended in a lot more closely with the reception’s urban/industrial theme with hints of copper & cool white neon.
I was tasked with deconstructing the 2D concept into a fabrication-ready set of drawings and cut files. The sign itself was fairly simple, aside from the bronze fret-cut letters & angled strip. These additions had to be water-jet cut due to the difficulty in laser cutting “yellow metals” using traditional C02-based machinery.
I also had to overcome the fact that I didn’t know how the existing sign was constructed and/or fixed. Unfortunately the client didn’t want the existing sign removed until the new Monolith was ready. I circumnavigated this problem by extending the steel framework up inside the outer aluminium pans and using the back panel to fix into the wall as opposed to fixing back through into the floor. This 200mm of tolerance gave flexibility to the installers as whatever or wherever the foundations were; the new Monolith just sat on top.
